My opinion of The Lord of the Rings trilogy is somewhere between 1 and 2.

I love them, but I don't think they're the last word on cinema, either. Still, they're supremely entertaining films, especially considering watching them takes a whole day and that's without any breaks.

To be more in depth:

Fellowship is great, marred only by the video game-like Moria sequence.

The Two Towers is also great, but not as good as Fellowship or Return of the King. It throws too much of the book into Return, though throwing Shelob into Return was a good idea. But I fucking love Helm's Deep and the Rohan sequences.

Return of the King, while quite flawed in bits, in nevertheless my favorite in the series. It's the most epic and is the most emotional.

And the extended editions make some good additions but also some unwelcome ones. It's great to have the Saruman scene back in Return but the EE of Fellowship totally fucks up the opening.

That's my last word on The Lord of the Rings.

They really are wonderful films. I don't think they're the be-all-end-all of cinema, but they are a high point in fantasy and SFX filmmaking, terrifically cast (seriously, few people give them credit for this, but they really do have the best ensemble cast since, like, The Great Escape), the combination of makeup, prosthetics, modelmaking and CGI creates a totally believable universe that you can get lost in. My complaints with the films are mostly small, like cutting Christopher Lee out of Return of the King and neglecting to fully explore Sam and Frodo's romantic relationship.

I loved them (and the music *cough*) They're certainly tryin on your patience, but the result is well worth it. It was an exteremely entertaining adventure, and very well made.

I personally LOVED the movies. Love that is; I still do. They are an incredible achievement in film, just as the books are an incredible achivement in fantastic literature. The music was beautiful, the overall look of the film was amazing and unbelievably detailed, and the performances were some of the best I've seen from certain actors in it.

Of course they're not the end-all-be-all of cinema. Wouldn't they have to stop making movies if that ever happened? Wink

But they are some really great movies.

I voted 2. I love the films, they're beautiful pieces of cinema, but they are flawed in ways. Orlando Bloom being one.

I love the attention to detail in the films though, and the epicness of it all.

My favourite is Fellowship of the Ring.

It's definitely the most consistent trilogy in terms of quality. Return of the King was the most impressive to me, but all three movies were really stunning adaptations. It still amazes me that Jackson was able to direct such an epic trilogy with nothing in his previous films that hinted he could do it.

never seen the 3rd part.

i probably would have liked them more if i was still 12/14, today they don't interest me.. other then the hobbit as i did read the book..when i was 14... wow long time ago.
